Notice verse 4 again: “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name.” Their chief goal had shifted from glorifying God and enjoying him forever to promoting their own renown. The tower of Babel would have actually been what is called a ziggurat—a stair-stepped, pyramid-shaped edifice. Literally, it was a stairway to heaven;
